Heuristics Analysis

To discover the product, realise its strengths and weaknesses from a new user perspective and better evaluate the upcoming workload.

loading time is very slow,
it lacks of visual hierarchy and modernity for targeting start-ups,
I encountered many bugs along the journey (fake/non-clickable buttons, poor automatic scrolling, etc.)
at certain point, it lacks transparency and essentials features regarding the services provided.

The contract creation journey has an interesting basis to work on but still requires lots of improvements.

To understand the way users interact with the website and identify the key pages.

Most of the users arrive on the home page, the others arrive on searched article or the pricing page. The latter must therefore be very convincing, clear and valuable or at least provide an easy access to the (main) landing page.
‍
It remains that all the pages during the first 3 interactions have a high abandonment rate except the About page that details the history of the company which can support the importance of trust and humanize the content in this context.

Some key figures:

age groups: 18-24 then 25-35,
mostly desktop version is used,
new visitors represent 86%,
relatively high bounce rate of 45%.

Competitive Benchmark

To understand and be inspired by market trends in terms of offers, services (features) and UX/UI design.‍

As a resume, the main advantages and inspirations to remember from the competitors wee:

a coherent and modern visual design,
the showcase of the dashboard in the homepage,
the presence of a chatbot in the dashboard,
a dashboard with the adapted features and responding well to the services they offer and finally,
the clarity and simplicity of their pricing model.

Questionnaire

The results of a previous survey conducted by the client with the users allowed us to identify the first possible improvements to make, especially regarding the contract creation journey.

The survey mainly showed that their conversion and confidence in the product and services was largely due to a first contact with the staff to either ask for information or be reassured.
A majority said that the home page and pricing page need further clarification.

The second important point is that the dashboard lacks essential functionalities to allow them to take full advantage of the resources and services provided. At a minimum, they need to be able to store, sort, track and edit their contracts.

Interviews

After 7 individual interviews with potential users we already start to realise the expectations for such product and some of the mistakes to avoid.

The two main expectations that lead us to distinguish two groups of participants (personas) were:

having an all-in-one solution to manage all their legal documentation and,
having an easy and affordable access to experts/lawyers for advice or follow-up.

The main conversion factors according to them are trust/credibility, price and time saving including ease of use.

Among other issues, we have chose the problem to focus on and established a value proposition that helped us to define our UX objectives and that surely addressed the main issues to resolve in order to achieve the clients' goals.

Wireframing & Prototyping

Prepare the prototype for testing

Before wireframing I realised that we would need a more detailed map of the contract creation journey than just user journey maps which are not going into the details of steps. I then created a user task flow and that was enough for me to start wireframing and make sure that I am not missing key steps so that we can test them with potential users as if they were using the product in a real life (or almost).‍‍

‍I was the only one in the team to build the wireframes and due to time constraints some information were missing in the first prototype but we did have manage to ask the users what they would expect and explain at some points what we think is missing during the usability sessions.

Usability testing & iterations

⏰ 2 weeks in part-time

There were 7 individual test sessions, each lasting between 30 minutes and 1 hour - all in remote.
The objective of this step was to validate and adjust if necessary the last interfaces created for the selected user journey: creation of a contract.

Starting from the home page as a new visitor, the participant had to create a specific contract.

After the testing sessions, we organized two design iterations workshops to discuss on our interviews results and sort our notes into a list of constructive design recommendations.

In addition to our design recommendations, I also had to work again on the user flow in general and brainstorm with the client on how the e-sign feature should work. I ended with a user story which gave me a good perspective on how the user goes from step to step and a new task flow specific to the e-sign feature.

Iterated prototype after testing

You can compare the two prototypes below by using the nav tags:

Used for testing

Reduce the quantity of text to concentrate attention on the features and benefits of the platform.
Bring a modernity touch in the information and overall structure.

After iterations

Even more clarify and focus on the main features and benefits.
End the page with a conversion area (CTA) to invite users rather than exposing packages that overall looked "bulky".
The final version will no longer present a research bar in the Hero section as it tended to make the user sticked to the top of the page to make their research rather than checking on the platform benefits and features below.
‍
Plus, this will further lighten the page and the "Resources" tag seemed obvious for users if they want to do a research.

Used for testing

Clarification of membership plans:

- using the cross system allowed us to reduce repetition and improve the membership description by focusing on features included or not;

- an information dot to hover was suggested to give more details if needed:

- we put the membership plans and the packages on the same page to help comparison and understanding of their offers.

After iterations

Packages were not understood by a majority of participants and they did not like the way they were presented.
The human support area was confusing for some users as it is already mentioned in the membership plans.
After discussions with the client, I have reviewed his pricing model to suggest a radical simplification of it.
Well appreciated.
‍
We reduced the number of packages to 3 and applied a discount on them depending on the membership plan.

And human support will finally be excluded of membership plan.

Used for testing

Proposition of more advanced filter to facilitate research among all the resources.
Improve transparency and clarification on each article and its content to avoid frustrations once opened.
Give the users a direct access (CTA) to get a document without opening the article related. The user will then be asked to log in or to create an account.

After iterations

The above area that repeated the hero section of the home page was removed to give the focus on the research part.
Simplification of the filter that looked too "impressive" - the advanced filter is kept for member in dashboard.
The original tag name "Encyclawpedia" was replaced by "Resources" for clarification reasons.
The CTA was made bigger and indicates the level of access to the legal document inside (or not) the article.

Creation of the area dedicated to create and manage their contracts.

- a filter specific to the research of contract was created.

After iterations

Better organisation of the features as some can be applied to multiple documents at the same time.
The users have now the possibility to sort their contracts in the manage area.
Out of this specific dashboard area, the sidebar and the whole navigation was simplified and adjusted to the new pricing model and client's needs.
And a chatbot was added and is available all along the dashboard experience.

Used for testing

The user is now able to save draft (button at the bottom) and see in real time if the form is well completed.

After iterations

The contract creation process, the name and price of the document are now visible all along the process.
The user will also be able to preview in real time the contact (preview button at the bottom).
An e-sign area was added at the bottom of the page.

About iterations

I realised that iterations never stop until you say stop 😅 .
The point is to say and make it stop at the right time. I believe this will come with experience and I will work for it.

I just wanted to say that the above iterated versions are not the final ones but reflect the main iterations. In any case, you will discover soon enough the latest prototype version!
